Think about your post-sugaring spiel. It’s usually something like: “Don’t do X, Y, or Z. Don’t forget to exfoliate. And moisturize.”
When we talk about post-hair removal skincare, the immediate don’ts—plus exfoliation and hydration—tend to get all the attention. And while those are undeniably important, we may be missing the forest for the trees.
Every hair removal service creates a temporary state of stress within the skin. After treatment, the skin isn’t simply managing moisture loss—it is responding to inflammation, supporting barrier recovery, and managing the oxidative stress that can accompany the treatment process.
Oxidative stress occurs when the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) exceeds the skin’s antioxidant defenses and ability to neutralize them. When we hear oxidative stress, most of us immediately think of UV exposure, smoking, pollution, and other environmental aggressors. But ROS are also produced as part of normal inflammatory and cellular processes—including the skin’s response to physical or thermal stress. Both of which we see in hair removal. Sugaring, waxing, shaving, and laser are very different modalities, but each introduces some combination of mechanical stress, friction, heat, or controlled tissue stress. These stimuli can activate inflammatory pathways and contribute to increased ROS production within the skin.
